In a surprising turn of events, in a world filled with countless different delays for various reasons, Larian Studios has decided to shock us all. Larian announced today in a press release that the threequel’s highly anticipated release was actually bumped up instead of another delay. The PC version of Baldur’s Gate 3 will be released on August 3, instead of the original release on August 31st. This essentially moves its release up four whole weeks.

The unfortunate news? The PlayStation 5 version has been delayed to September 6th. This puts it in direct competition with a little indie game called Starfield

The More Frames, the Better!

Larian Studios has announced that the development of Baldur’s Gate 3 for the PS5 edition requires additional time to achieve the desired 60 frames per second. Rather than compromising on quality, the studio has decided to postpone the game until it meets its standards.

In their statement, Larian expressed their commitment to delivering a high-quality experience. Baldur’s Gate 3 is aiming for a smooth 60fps, and while the team is making good progress on the platform, they require a bit more time. Larian is adamant about not giving in to compromises on the quality of the game, and that it would be a disservice to settle for 30fps or make other shortcuts just to meet an arbitrary deadline.

Larian emphasized their dedication to pushing the boundaries of RPGs on the PS5, stating, “We understand that folks may be disappointed with this but we’re close enough to reaching new heights for RPGs on the system that the benefits of a short delay outweigh the downsides of rushing the PS5 release and having to downscale.

Regarding the Xbox version of BG3, Larian acknowledged the technical limitations of the Series S console as a potential roadblock. While the studio remains optimistic about bringing the game to the Xbox Series X, their priority is to ensure optimal performance across the entire Series X|S ecosystem, without any compromises. Larian assured fans that they are investing substantial effort into making it work and will provide updates on the progress.

With this, they have committed to releasing a good product on Microsoft’s consoles. Just like the PlayStation 5, Larian is ready to release the game only when it’s ready.

Larian also confirmed that they are actively developing a comprehensive Mac version of Baldur’s Gate 3, which will be released at a later date. Michael Douse, the publishing boss at Larian, expressed the studio’s commitment to releasing the game on multiple platforms while maintaining the highest quality standards:

We’ve always been a studio that aims to release on as many platforms as possible, in order of readiness. We’ve also aimed for the highest possible quality on every platform we’ve released on… (Baldur’s Gate 3) features over 170 hours of cinematics, more than twice the length of the entirety of Game of Thrones, and more than three times the dialogue of all three Lord of the Rings novels combined.” the quote reads.

Douse added that delaying the PC version would have been the wrong decision, given their confidence in meeting the required standards. Players will be able to face off against Jason Isaacs’ antagonist much, much earlier than anticipated.

The Final Panel from Hell?

Larian intends to provide more details about Baldur’s Gate 3 during the Panel From Hell: Release Showcase event on July 7. Be sure to stay tuned here at Fextralife and the Baldur’s Gate 3 Wiki for more on the game.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is Larian’s next foray into turn-based sandbox RPGs. Players will be able to create their own characters with questionable origins. They will select between the traditional D&D classes, with all the skills, abilities, and feats that come with it.
